<h3>Preamble</h3>Our nation is at an inflection point. What kind of America will we be? A land of more freedom, or less freedom? More rights or fewer? An economy rigged for the rich and powerful, or where everyone has a fair shot at getting ahead? Will we lower the temperature in our politics and come together, or treat each other as enemies instead?"The stakes in this election are enormously high."President Biden and Vice President Harris took office during a time of global pandemic, record job loss, and record crime. These past four years, Democrats proved once again that democracy can deliver, and made tremendous progress turning the country around. President Biden and Vice President Harris turned a setback into a great American comeback for working families."We've created nearly 16 million jobs, a record number of small businesses are being started, and factories are coming home. We lowered families' health insurance premiums, and we stood up to Big Pharma to lower prescription drug prices. We're helping students catch up on learning loss, and we're forgiving millions of crushing student loans. We passed the first significant gun safety law in decades and made record investments in public safety, putting more police officers on the beat; today, violent crime is at its lowest in 50 years. We're fighting climate change, reducing pollution, and fueling a clean energy boom. We're rebuilding our nation's roads, bridges, highways, ports, airports, water systems, and more. We're seizing record amounts of fentanyl and securing our border in the face of Republican inaction. We're closing the racial wealth gap and the gender pay gap. We've expanded benefits and services for toxic-exposed veterans; and we're strengthening NATO and restoring American leadership in the world."There is so much more to do. Democrats will fix the tax system so everyone has a fair shot. We will restore the right to choose. We will continue to bring down costs for families. New York state residents will be asked to vote this year on Proposition One, an <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xuGFE0aawtM2njj55lPUW7V7-w-P4AyP/edit" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Equal Rights Amendment to the state constitution.</a>The amendment will close loopholes that could permit extremists to restrict people’s rights to reproductive freedom, including abortion. It will also protect civil rights for the LGBTQ community and elderly New Yorkers.

<h2>TCDC is the county-level organization of town, city and ward committees</h2>The committee’s foundation is the base of registered Democratic voters. Interested voters can join Town and Ward committees, which then unite to form the County Committee. HOUSE SITTING: Marc Molinaro jumped right aboard last month’s anti-Haitian bandwagon&nbsp;By Claudia Montague WheatleyAnn Reichlin, who usually writes&nbsp;House Sitting,&nbsp;has devoted all her energies to registering voters in Tompkins County last month and this. Editor Claudia Montague Wheatley is guest-writing this month’s column—these are her opinions, and hers alone.What are we to think about “Moderate” Marc Molinaro—the Republican Member of Congress who bills himself as being above the MAGA crowd?Here’s my take: He’s just as apt to leverage racism and xenophobia as any other motley member of the formerly Grand Old Party. Molinaro proved it last month, by adopting the anti-Haitian libel spread by Republican V.P. candidate J.D. Vance and his running mate, Donald Trump.Vance started it by sharing “concerns” (read: rumors) about the supposed disappearance of household pets in Springfield, Ohio—the state he represents in the U.S. Senate. There was a time when a Republican senator would tread carefully around a story that immigrants who had come into the country legally were stealing and eating his constituents’ dogs and cats—but this is not that time and Vance is not that senator.Trump seized on the rumors with his usual lack of regard for facts, blurting out, “They’re eating the pets” during his September 10 debate with Kamala Harris. That’s when the story really took off: to the detriment of Haitian immigrants in Ohio, and also to their non-immigrant neighbors. There were bomb threats. School and business closures. Vandalism aimed at the newcomers. Haitian residents became fearful. City officials begged Trump and Vance to stop.Instead, Vance announced in an interview that he “created” the pet-eating story to draw media attention to the “suffering” of Ohioans. What suffering? The media never got around to answering that question, focusing instead on the outrageousness of the lie and the threats of violence it sparked.Molinaro waded into the fray even before the debate,&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=e46cb77ae0&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">sharing a photo</a>&nbsp;of a Black man carrying a goose and a “news” story about pet-eating from a right-wing outlet on Twitter/X. He blamed the “border crisis” on his opponent, Democrat Josh Riley, who is not (yet) in Congress. When called on it, Molinaro fell back on the Vance “creating stories” excuse. “It took a cat tweet to get the attention about a border crisis that wouldn’t be happening without Josh Riley,” Molinaro said,&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=ecf420617a&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">in a statement</a>.It took very little sleuthing to discover that the Black man in the photo was a municipal employee of a different Ohio city, whose job included disposing of dead water fowl from city parks—and that the “news” story was based on rumors started when a Springfield woman’s cat went missing—only to be found a few days later, alive and well, in her own basement.Marc the MINO (Moderate In Name Only) did no sleuthing at all. He tarred an entire community of hard-working immigrants, who were invited to move to Springfield to fill sorely needed jobs, with the same brush Vance and Trump had used. And he did so just to score points against an opponent.Such casual affixing of a target on an already beleaguered minority, for purely personal gain, is unacceptable no matter who is doing it. When done by a member of Congress, it is many times more egregious. We need to take it many times more seriously.We have lots of good reasons to vote for Josh Riley. Now there’s one more very good reason to urge voters in NY-19 to reject Molinaro. Marc the MINO has revealed himself to be a racist, cut from the same rancid cloth as the worst members of his party. With “moderates” like him in the House, voting on matters that affect our lives, who needs extremists?

Like many locals, he worked in a big city (Washington) to hone skills, then moved back home. Riley’s deep Southern Tier roots and the experience he acquired in Washington will make him an unflagging champion for women, children and the working and middle class in Congress.Riley’s opponent, Marc Molinaro, projects a fake centrist image but voted against reimbursing servicewomen who have to travel to obtain abortions. The AFL-CIO says Molinaro has voted for working people only 10 percent of the time. If re-elected, he will certainly vote to renew the deficit-busting rich people’s tax cut of 2017. Molinaro’s vicious, dangerous lies about Haitian immigrants and crime shame him and us.State Senator&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=0162f341ed&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Lea Webb</a>&nbsp;has a sterling record. She fights to expand access to health care and the ballot for all New Yorkers, and has delivered meaningful state funding to Tompkins County: In September alone, Senator Webb announced state grants of $20,000 to the William George Agency for Children’s Services in Freeville, $250,000 to the Ithaca Fire Department for a new fire rescue boat and $103,000 to the State Theatre for operating expenses.&nbsp;Her opponent, Mike Sigler, opposes abortion except for rape, incest and the health of the mother. He joined other New York Republicans in suing to overturn a law widening early voting ballot access to absentee voters.Assemblywoman&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=1ff13ef61d&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Anna Kelles</a>&nbsp;is running unopposed but has a record worth noting. She and Senator Webb make an excellent team, joining forces to save Ithaca Car Share and sponsoring bills in the Senate and Assembly to protect our lakes and other waterways.Locally,&nbsp;District Attorney&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=e5d75d42fc&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Matt Van Houten</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;City Court Judge&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=9dfdeb58ae&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Rick Wallace</a>&nbsp;are also running unopposed for re-election.&nbsp;Judge&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=6169b3940d&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Maura Kennedy-Smith</a>&nbsp;is running unopposed for County Judge. All three are widely respected for fair-minded, forward-looking performances in office.U.S. Senator&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=90ce99ca99&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Kirsten Gillibrand</a>&nbsp;was appointed to replace Hillary Clinton in 2009. She has been an invaluable advocate for local undertakings, like Dryden’s broadband internet project, and national ones like the PACT Act, which extended benefits for veterans exposed to Agent Orange and other toxic substances.Her opponent, Mike Sapraicone, is … endorsed by Donald Trump, with all that goes with it. Sapraicone pushes the same grotesque lies about immigrants and crime. He calls New York’s abortion laws too liberal and suggests a seven-week ban. And how, exactly, is a retired LEO/private investigator with no legislative experience qualified to serve in the U.S. Senate?&nbsp;At the top of our ticket is a dynamic pair with a lifetime of public service.&nbsp;Presidential candidate <a href="https://kamalaharris.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Kamala Harris</a>&nbsp;jailed drug dealers and sex traffickers as San Francisco District Attorney; as California Attorney General, she clawed back money from predatory lenders. As U.S. Senator and Vice President, she has championed women’s rights to access health care and negotiated with countries of origin to reduce refugee traffic at the southern border.Vice presidential contender <a href="https://kamalaharris.com/meet-governor-tim-walz/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Tim Walz</a>&nbsp;was a teacher and coach. He served in the National Guard. In Congress Walz worked across the aisle to support service people and veterans. As governor of Minnesota, he secured free meals for every school kid, stood up for women’s rights, championed the middle and working class and cut taxes.Republican Donald Trump lost his inherited wealth in a string of bankruptcies, entering new business sectors without learning about them first and ignoring the experts (sound familiar?). He brags about overturning Roe when he isn’t running away from Dobbs. A draft dodger, he disparages the military. His only legislative achievement was the 2017 tax cut for the wealthy, which fueled the largest deficit in American history. A felon, he owes millions in damages to a woman he was found guilty of sexually assaulting. On January 6th, 2021, he attacked our 248-year-old democracy to overturn an election.Trump’s running mate, J.D.Vance, supports a national abortion ban; believes government shouldn’t support childcare, and has decried laws that enable women to divorce abusive husbands. His statements about crime and immigrants are as vicious as they are false.Finally, New Yorkers will vote on Prop One, an&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=b32cd795d9&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Equal Rights Amendment</a>&nbsp;to the state constitution. This has been 101 years in the making (see “Looking Back” in this newsletter). Ithaca's Robert Cantelmo joins other NYS mayors in supporting congressional action on the Equal Rights Amendment this year. The Sign4ERA tour was in Ithaca Tuesday to drum up interest in the amendment, which has been in constitutional limbo since the 1920s.

State Senator Lea Webb announced that she has secured $120,000 in state funds to support infrastructure projects at the&nbsp;Kitchen Theatre Company (KTC). This will enable the organization to renovate its lobby, providing a more welcoming and accessible environment for both artists and patrons.Founded in 1991, KTC has produced more than 200 plays and has consistently challenged audiences to see the world differently. Emily Jackson, Producing Artistic Director, said the state’s investment “signals a deep appreciation and understanding that arts organizations are impactful cultural, social, and economic drivers in our community.”Senator Webb also announced $120,000 in state funding to build an addition to the Picnic (Large) Pavilion at Stewart Park. It will house equipment and supplies for the Stewart Park Day Camp, eliminating the need for campers and staff to cross the parking lot to get camp supplies. Molinaro on Abortion Rights: Setting the Record StraightMarc Molinaro talks a good game on abortion rights. In fact, he's come out with a new ad claiming that he believes that reproductive choices are between a woman and her doctor. While I appreciate the sentiment, I just don't believe that he is sincere.In his first term in Congress, Molinaro has had ample opportunity to support women's reproductive choices; yet time and time again he has voted for amendments that would do exactly the opposite. For example, Marc Molinaro voted Yes on<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=d03031c328&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">&nbsp;H.Amdt.222 to HR 2670</a>, which would prohibit the Secretary of Defense from paying for or reimbursing expenses relating to abortion services.Molinaro also voted Yes on the&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=533092e757&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Pregnant Students Rights Act</a>. Although this sounds nice (who wouldn't want more rights?) the bill includes language that implies that college students are pressured to get abortions, and claims that abortion causes numerous health risks such as bleeding, cramping and abdominal pain. Perhaps it has not occurred to Mr. Molinaro that pregnancy carries all of these same risks.Finally, Molinaro voted in favor of a bill that would have hampered regulation of crisis pregnancy centers. In the words of the&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=c4448bafa9&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ACLU</a>: "So-called crisis pregnancy centers are fake abortion clinics that attract patients by advertising free health care services, emotional support, and medical information, then use that trust to manipulate patients and dissuade them from having an abortion."&nbsp;If Mr. Molinaro actually supports reproductive choice, voting Yes on these terrible bills is a weird way to demonstrate it.&nbsp;I recently received a mailer from his campaign proclaiming: “37 bills passed and 11 signed into law.” According to&nbsp;<a href="http://Congress.gov" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Congress.gov</a>, only one bill co-sponsored by Molinaro (along with 300 other cosponsors) has been signed into law:&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=36e966b6f8&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">HR 1096: 250th Anniversary of the United States Marine Corps Commemorative Coin Act</a>. An additional&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=da1294d81a&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">15 bills</a>&nbsp;for which he is listed as a cosponsor have passed the House, but did not get signed into law. These include the Working Dog Commemorative Coin Act and the Parents Bill of Rights. He was also a&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=5ae1ac9a70&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">co-sponsor on 45 resolutions</a>&nbsp;that passed the House, including “National Tire Safety Week,” “Expressing Opposition to the NY Clean Slate Act,” and “Censuring Adam Schiff.” Marc Molinaro did sponsor&nbsp;<a href="https://tcdemocrats.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=631a395b582a53d12df7817d6&amp;id=fab72e5787&amp;e=527a80872c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">39 bills</a>, five of which passed the House, but none so far have passed the Senate or been signed into law.Yet his mailer makes it seem as if he sponsored or cosponsored 37 successful bills. I'm not sure how he came up with his numbers. Perhaps he voted for 37 bills that passed the House—which is hardly anything to brag about.&nbsp;It's time to elect Democrat Josh Riley—someone who can actually get things done in Congress. —Ann Reichlin
