Stop the Anti-Voter SAVE Act in the Senate

Contact your U.S. Senator

Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Anti-Voter “SAVE” act with a largely party-line vote, 220-208.

Consideration of the bill —known as HR22 / S128— is now in the hands of the U.S. Senate. The legislation, cleverly named the “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility” act, will require that every eligible voter provide documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, even though voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering and voting. Additionally, the citizenship documentation would need to be submitted in person to election officials.

According to the Brennan Center For Justice, the SAVE Act would undermine voter registration for all Americans.

  • More than 20 million Americans don’t have the required documentation to register, re-register, or report a change of address.

  • The bill would obliterate or upend longstanding and popular methods of voter registration for all voters, including registration by mail, voter registration drives, online voter registration, and automatic voter registration.

  • Voters of color, voters who change their names (notably, married women), and younger voters would be most significantly affected.

What can you do?

  1. Read more about the SAVE Act.

  2. Contact your Senator and tell them to vote NO on the SAVE Act and to encourage their colleagues to do the same.

  3. If you've already contacted your Senator then call their office directly.

Here is a call script:

As your constituent, I implore you to oppose S.128 the SAVE Act, which would require citizenship documentation to register to vote despite the fact that voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering.

It is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections. Additionally, state election officials ban non-citizen voting in all state elections and have systems to verify an individual voter’s eligibility and ensure that voter rolls are accurate. The bill’s requirement of a document to prove American citizenship to register to vote in federal elections is unnecessary and creates yet another barrier to voting.

Please vote “No,” on the SAVE Act to ensure that every eligible US citizen has the freedom to vote unimpeded by discriminatory rules rooted in fear and division.
