Spotlight: This Is Not A Drill: Trump's Voter Suppression Timeline

City of Ithaca Democratic Committee
Ann Reichlin, chair

By perpetuating lies, Trump has always undermined confidence in our elections even going so far as to foment an insurrection when he lost the 2020 election. Since the beginning of his second term he continues to abuse his presidential powers in his attempt to take control over our election rules and processes. The Voter Suppression Timeline below includes some of Trump's attempts to throttle voter registration and voter participation. These include some of his executive orders, court responses, social media threats, and Congress's attempts to pass legislation to suppress the vote. Please note that the avalanche of orders and lawsuits caused by Trump's lawlessness can be confusing. I've done my best as a layperson to sort them out, but apologize in advance if I have missed something. Feel free to reach out to me if you would like to join me in keeping track of Trump's Voter Suppression Timeline.

March 2025:  Executive order on voting: Among other things it imposes citizenship verification in order to register to vote. This would greatly impede volunteer efforts to register voters.

April 2025:  SAVE Act: passed House: no movement in the Senate  The SAVE Act would impose similar restrictions as the executive order on voting. If passed it would be significantly more difficult to reverse the policies. Passage requires overcoming the filibuster.

April 2025: The executive order on voting was challenged in court, including one by a coalition of states including New York and the another by a coalition of organizations including the League of Women Voters. A universal injunction imposed for parts of the order, including the citizen verification component. The court's injunction prevents parts of the executive order from going into effect.

June 2025:  Supreme Court rules against universal injunctions in a case unrelated to the voter executive order. However, the ruling could impact other cases where universal injunctions were in place.

July 2025: After the Supreme Court's decision pertaining to universal injunctions, the injunction in one of the lawsuits only applies to the states that specifically challenged the order on voting.

New York State challenged the order so for the time being there are no additional hoops to go through and we are still allowed as volunteers to register voters. There is a second lawsuit challenging this executive order winding its way through the courts.

July 2025:  Trump appeals ruling that challenges his executive order on voting

August 2025: Trump administration intends to impose funding restrictions on election security funds on states that do not follow his executive order on voting

August 2025: Trump threatens to create a new executive order that would require voter ID for every election in order to vote.
